This Great Graphic was posted on Business Insider. It shows the huge lead that PayPal has in the market. However, it is not really internet money, or electronic money, as some have suggested. They help facilitate on-line transactions and cash free transactions at brick-and-mortar, but it works with the bank accounts.
If it proves sufficiently profitable or a useful vehicle to sell other products or services, it should not be surprising if bank try to squeeze out the middle man.

The US may be the leading edge of mobile payments, but it still seems like early days. Rapid growth off of low bases is common in this part of new product/service cycle.
