This Great Graphic was published in the Economist and draws from work by the Pew Research Center. It is interested in looking at variables that are associated with people who believe in creationism and evolution.
There seems to a role for gender (65% of men and 55% of women accept the idea that humans evolved from lower forms of life). There is also a role for age, where younger people tend to be more skeptical of creationism.
It is also seemingly a partisan issue. Last year 43% of self-identified Republicans accepted evolution (down from 54% in 2009). Two-thirds of Democrats and Independents accept evolution. However, the role of religion, shown in the chart, appears to be the largest factor, overshadowing other variables such as party affiliation, education, race, sex and age.
