This Great Graphic, drawing on from the CIA's World Factbook, and Chinese government data, was published by the Wall Street Journal. It shows that China's two largest cities, Shanghai and Beijing have populations that rival countries.
Shanghai, for example, with 24 mln people, has edged above the population of Australia. Beijing, with a population of 21 mln people, is nearly twice as large as Greece and Bolivia. The two megapolises together have a larger population than the least populated G7 country, Canada.
The sheer scale of China is breathtaking. Size alone poses developmental and administrative challenges. It is with China's help, the majority of people now live in cities. The Financial Times recently reported that data from the US Geological Service and China's National Bureau of Statistics indicated that China produced more cement in 2011-2012 than the US did in the 20th century.
