This Cool Video discusses creativity in an entertaining and enlightening way in about 4.5 minutes. Drew Christie created it for the New York Times and it was posted on Vimeo. I saw it on one of my favorite blogs, Maria Popova's Brain Pickings. It turns out that as much as we pride ourselves on originality, in truth it is largely derivative. One does not only need a village to raise a child, as Hillary Clinton noted in her book, but it apparently takes a village to think originally too.
Kirby Ferguson makes a similar point in the nearly 10 minute long TedGlobal video in 2012. Ferguson is a film maker and remixer. He argues 'remix" characterizes art. By remix he means a reference to another work. Originality builds on others. Click here for the link.
