This Cool Video from DNews offers an entertaining three minute refutation of the widespread but mistaken notion that people only use 10% of their brains. From an evolutionary point of view, it makes sense that there would not significant waste. It stands to reason that such a vital and complex organ has some built in redundancies. It also makes sense that some functions can be transferred to other parts.
Yet in some ways, the video side steps a critical issue by directing us to the physical hardware of the brain. Is it possible that the software is not fully being utilized? When I am listening to music the my entire ipod is being used, but the volume and the brightness of the screen are not set on their maximum level. Just like applying science to physical training has improved athletic performances, applying science to teaching and learning might also improve intellectual achievements. It seems that our main challenges do not come from insufficient knowledge, but the lack of understanding.
