Cool Video: Greece Revisited

December 31, 2014
This Cool Video was posted by Euronews.  It is about 2.5 minutes long.  The basic premise is that the Syriza coalition in Greece is acting like a good opposition party, not too different than the current Prime Minister Samaras who was critical of the previous Socialist government and the austerity agreement negotiated with the official creditors, …

Dollar Slips at end of Year

December 31, 2014
The US dollar is trading with a slightly heavier bias as the last minute position adjustment takes a toll. The dollar-bloc and Scandi's are doing somewhat better, sterling is a few ticks higher, while the euro and yen are straddling yesterday's closing levels in the moribund activity. Several markets in Asia, including Japan and Korea, and…

Great Graphic: Euro and Two-Year Interest Rate Differential

December 30, 2014
There are many things behind the decline in the euro that pushed from $1.40 in early May to fresh two-year lows yesterday.   Chief among those reasons, we posit, is the diverging trajectory of monetary policy.
The Great Graphic, created on Bloomberg, shows the euro-dollar exchange rate (yellow line) and the discount Germany pays under the US to bo…

Three Developments in Thin Markets

December 30, 2014
Market participation has been thinned by the approaching New Year.   This is making for some choppy price action.  The result is weaker equity markets and a softer US dollar.  The greenback is lower against the euro and sterling.  Sterling held just above $1.55 in Asia before recovering a bit in Europe.  The euro slipped to a new low of $1.2125 in…

Over the past six months, the Canadian dollar has been the best performing of the major currencies against the US dollar.  It has only lost about 8.3% against the greenback.
On the other hand, the Russian rouble is the worst performing of currency.  Over the past six months it has lost almost 40% against the dollar.

Prospect of Greek Election Weighs on European Asset Markets

December 29, 2014
The failure of Greek Prime Minister Samaras to secure sufficient votes in the third and final parliamentary attempt to select a new president has sparked a sell-off in European stocks and peripheral bonds.  Up until now, the contagion from Greece has been remarkably limited.  Perhaps it is the thin holiday markets that is exaggerating the knock-on…

Six Issues for the Last Week of 2014

December 28, 2014
We identify six key issues for investors in the holiday-shortened week ahead.
1.  The recent string of US economic data showed not only an upward revision in Q3 GDP to 5%, but also strong consumption data, rising confidence and continued improvement in the labor market (weekly initial jobless claims). This has reinforced market expectations for t…

The Dollar's Outlook at the End of 2014

December 27, 2014
The US dollar closed higher against all the major currencies during the holiday shortened week. The lack of liquidity may have exaggerated the weakness of Swedish krona and Norwegian krone, the poorest performing major currencies.  Both lost about 1.5% against the greenback.
The least weak currencies were in the dollar-bloc.The Canadian and New Zea…

Cool Video: 4D Printing, So Tomorrow

December 27, 2014
I thought 3D printing was cutting edge.  It is being taken another step.  It is 3D printing of materials with hinges that unfold, as it were after printing.  It takes some time to get one head around it.  To help, I have found two Cool Videos.
The first is sleek.  It gives you a sense of what 4D printing is a little more than three minutes long.

Visions of Sugar Plums and G7 Coordination?

December 26, 2014
At best it is the holiday season when hopes and wishes abound. It may be as it was for Ebenezer, "an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of undone potato."  At worst it is spiked eggnog and the peppermint schnapps.
How else could reasonable people, like former ECB President Trichet, say that there is…

Boxing Day Note

December 26, 2014
In thin trading conditions, the major currencies are little changed.  The euro is straddling the $1.22 area.  It has held above the low seen earlier this week near $1.2165.   Since the low was seen, the reaction high has been limited to the $1.2250 area.  For the third consecutive session, the dollar held above the JPY120 level.  It had reached a …

Five Interesting Posts to Whet Your Political Economy Appetite

December 25, 2014
1.  To make US shale production economical, it required a high price of oil and access to cheap credit.   The latter was predicated on the former.   From the exploration and production to the transportation and housing markets in Texas and North Dakota, the whole shale ecosystem is highly leveraged.  Therein lies the Achilles' Heel. Mr Crude m…
